How To Calculate Your Protein Needs (courtesy Tracy Russell)

Before you figure out where you are going to get your protein from, it is a good idea to know how much protein you really need. A quick and easy way to calculate your protein needs is to do some simple math.


Step 1: Calculate Your Ideal Body Weight


This is known as the HAMWI formula.  For men, use this calculation:

106 pounds for 60 inches of height (5 feet) and add 6 pounds for every inch over 60.

For women, use this one: 100 pounds for 60 inches of height and add 5 pounds for every inch over 60.

This calculation gives you a basic idea of what your ideal weight should be if you have a medium frame.  Your ideal weight is actually a weight range and may vary from + or – 10% depending on your frame size.

Using the calculation above, I am 5’3” or 63 inches tall, so my ideal body weight is 115 pounds (52 kilograms) if I had a medium frame. 

My ideal weight range is between 103.5 – 126.5.  I typically hover in the 107-109 range because I have a smaller than medium build.


 Step 2: Calculate Your Protein Requirements By Using Your Ideal Body Weight

Using the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of .8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight, my daily protein goal should be about 42 grams.

If you are very active or athletic, your protein needs may be higher.

Now that you know how much protein you really need, lets look atwhat plant sources are highest in protein. I’m not going to go over all the fruits and vegetables that are high in protein, I want to focus on the ones that I add to my green smoothies.



At the very bottom, I’ll give you a couple of my favorite protein-rich green smoothie recipes that do not contain (or need) any protein powders.


Protein Rich Greens:


1 small head of purple cabbage = 8.1 grams


1 head Romaine lettuce = 7.7 grams


3 cups kale = 6.6 grams


3 cups dandelion greens = 4.5 grams


 Protein Fruits:


1 mamey = 4.8 grams


2 tablespoons goji berries = 4 grams


3 cups blueberries = 3.3 grams


3 cups grapes = 3.3 grams


3 cups pineapple = 2.7 grams


3 cups papaya = 2.6 grams


1 medium banana = 1.5 gram


1 mango = 1.1 gram


1 large apple = 1 gram


 Other Foods I Put In Smoothies:


 ¼ cups raw oats = 6.6 grams


2 teaspoons of chia seeds = 1.5 grams



As you can see, greens are going to have more protein than fruit. It is really important to make a green smoothie rather then just a fruit smoothie if you are looking for something to boost your protein.


 Also, most people do not know that all fruits and vegetables

(including leafy greens), contain complete proteins – they have all essential amino acids!


 My Favorite Protein-Rich Green Smoothie Recipes


 These green smoothies are great to drink before or after workouts, but you can also make them for breakfast or lunch to help you get through the day.


 Both recipes contain more than 11 grams of protein without a protein powder supplement.  If you want to further boost your protein intake, I recommend taking a look at Epic Protein by Sprout Living Foods (http://www.incrediblesmoothies.com/store/#protein).  


Blueberry-Banana Smoothie


 2 bananas, peeled


1 cup blueberries


1 head romaine lettuce, chopped


4 to 6 ounces of filtered water


 Calories: 432 | Protein: 11.8g | Carbs: 104g | Fat: 3g | Fiber: 23.8g


 Mango Smoothies


 ½ head of romaine lettuce, chopped


2 mangoes, peeled and pitted


¼ cups raw oats


1 to 2 teaspoons cinnamon


4 to 6 ounces of filtered water


 Calories: 474 | Protein: 12.2g | Carbs: 106g | Fat: 4g | Fiber: 18.2g

3) Fluoride Linked to #1 Cause of Death in New Research

Groundbreaking new research has linked sodium fluoride to cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death worldwide. Researchers found that fluoride consumption directly stimulates the hardening of your arteries, a condition known as atherosclerosis that is highly correlatedwith the #1 killer. Sodium fluoride is currently added to the water supply of many cities worldwide, despite extreme opposition from health professionals and previous studieslinking it to decreased IQ

In their research, scientists examined the relationship between fluoride intake and the hardening (calcification) of the arteries. Studying more than 60 patients, the researchers found a significant correlation between fluoride consumption and the calcification of your arteries. Published in the January edition of the journal Nuclear Medicine Communications, the research <http://www.greenmedinfo.com/article/there-association-vascular-fluoride-uptake-vascular-calcification-and-coronary-artery-diseas>  highlights the fact that mass fluoride exposure may be to blame for the cardiovascular disease epidemic that takes more lives each year than cancer. In 2008, cardiovascular killed 17 million people.

According to the authors of the study:

“The coronary fluoride uptake value in patients with cardiovascular events was significantly higher than in patients without cardiovascular events.”

Amazingly, this is not the first report to come out on the dangers of water fluoridation, however the United States government along with other nations have allowed for the continued fluoridation of the public water supply despite these key findings. In fact, the U.S. government has even gone on record <http://naturalsociety.com/water-fluoridation-war-government-admit-dangers-experts-speak-ou/>  stating that a reduction in water fluoridation needs to occur following the results of a massive study that found water fluoridation affected cognitive function to the point of lowering the IQ of children. It turns out that the announcement was little more than a public relations stunt to curtail the massive wave of activism that followed the findings.

Government Admits Dangers Yet Continues to Pump Fluoride Into Your Water Supply

Over 24 other studies have unanimously concluded that fluoride negatively impacts cognitive function. In addition to these 24 studies focusing on cognition, over 100 animal studies have linked fluoride to an increase in male infertility, diabetes, and a whole host of other health problems. In the latest study on cognition, it was found that that 28% of the children who lived in an area where fluoride levels were low achieved the highest test scores. This means that the children exposed to less fluoride scored normal or advanced, while only 8% of fluoridated children did the same.

You need a filtration system on your home water source. A filter to remove the fluoride and chlorine and the heavy metals is an absolute must. All to the waterways on the planet have heavy metals from the Artic, to the pristine waterfalls in Costa Rica to the Amazon to the Himalayans.
